Tech sector 'will boost UK employment'

UK employment will receive a boost from the technology sector this year, according to a new study.

Research commissioned by General Electric shows that 71 per cent of hi-tech companies are optimistic that their performance will improve over the next year.

The data also revealed that half of companies in the sector intend to recruit more workers over the next 12 months, which may include those in sales recruitment positions.

Mark Elborne, president and chief executive of GE in the UK, said hi-tech manufacturers were "much more confident" than other organisations.

"Our research shows a vibrant and positive sector that can help revitalise the UK economy over the next few years. Many of those surveyed had a positive 2010 and feel confident about 2011, particularly when discussing the potential in export markets," he explained.

It comes after David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that the ongoing recovery in the UK's industrial and manufacturing sectors needs to be reinforced if the country is to avoid potential risks.
