Flexible working 'has many advantages'

Talent shortages 'will emerge in 2011'

The emergence of talent shortages in 2011 will be hard to avoid as the economy begins to grow, one sector body has predicted.

That is the opinion of Kevin Green, chief executive of the recruitment and Employment Confederation, who said that one of the things that will re-emerge as the country's economy recovers is talent and skills shortages.

He noted that the country has not yet tackled the issue of getting young people to have the right type of skills and employability, while many students are not studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects and gaining right type of qualifications.

Climate change initiatives 'could lead to improved job prospects'

Growing numbers of sales recruitment jobs could become available as a result of climate change initiatives carried out by companies in the UK.

According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), firms that start implementing green measures as soon as possible have the potential to considerably increase their business growth.

Speaking at the launch of Defra and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants' (CIMA) Climate Change Resilience Toolkit, environment minister Lord Henley explained: "Smart businesses that take action now to limit the risks and identify the opportunities climate change could bring will steal a march on their rivals."

Executive director at CIMA Markets Andrew Harding went on to add that being sustainable "makes good business sense".

The Climate Change Toolkit is an interactive resource based on ten questions that give firms the chance to assess the areas - related to the environment - in which they are least likely to experience disruption in their operations.

IT and engineering jobs 'driving growth'

The increasing number of jobs being created in the IT and engineering sectors, including sales recruitment positions, is helping to drive the recovery of the employment market, experts have claimed.

Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, and Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG, made the comments following the publication of the organisations' latest Report on Jobs.

The study shows that the overall level of job vacancies increased at the strongest rate since April 2010 last month, while there were strong rises in the number of both permanent and temporary staff placements.

Mr Green and Mr Brown said the IT engineering and construction industries indicate how private sector jobs growth is offsetting public sector cuts.

However, they called on the government to do more to support growth by encouraging private sector organisations to create even more jobs.

It comes after data published by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply and Markit in the Construction Purchasing Managers' Index showed that recruitment activity in the UK construction industry, including the hiring of people in sales jobs, is continuing to recover as the sector emerges from the recession.

Tech sector 'will boost UK employment'

UK employment will receive a boost from the technology sector this year, according to a new study.

Research commissioned by General Electric shows that 71 per cent of hi-tech companies are optimistic that their performance will improve over the next year.

The data also revealed that half of companies in the sector intend to recruit more workers over the next 12 months, which may include those in sales recruitment positions.

Mark Elborne, president and chief executive of GE in the UK, said hi-tech manufacturers were "much more confident" than other organisations.

"Our research shows a vibrant and positive sector that can help revitalise the UK economy over the next few years. Many of those surveyed had a positive 2010 and feel confident about 2011, particularly when discussing the potential in export markets," he explained.

It comes after David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that the ongoing recovery in the UK's industrial and manufacturing sectors needs to be reinforced if the country is to avoid potential risks.

Demand for engineers 'will increase in 2011'

The demand for engineers in the UK is set to increase over the next 12 months, one expert has predicted.

Lee Knowles, regional director at NES, told the Recruiter that demand for engineering talent, which includes those in the sales recruitment sector, will rise substantially.

He explained that demand will begin to grow in 2011 and eventually peak in 2012, with the need for engineers going up "across a few different sectors".

Mr Knowles added: "There is a surge in renewable energy - people are talking about 20,000 new jobs. There is the growth of wind farms, bio mass and bio fuels. There has also been a resurgence in the oil and gas sector."

His comments follow the publication of a recent report by the Confederation of British Industry, which showed that 13 per cent more manufacturing employers said they expect their order books to rise over the next quarter than in the last survey.

Sales engineers 'are in demand'

The demand for sales engineers continues to grow as technical roles stimulate the UK jobs market, the latest report has revealed.

According to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG Report on Jobs, which draws on original survey data provided by consultancies, sales engineer recruitment remains strong, along with job demand in the construction sector.

Commenting on the report, Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG, commented: "As in previous months engineering, construction and executive staff have been most in demand, an indication of the continuing recovery in the private and manufacturing sector."

Overall, job creation in the UK has continued to rise, though at a slightly slower rate than in recent months.

It comes after a recent survey carried out by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation for its Technology Demand and Supply report showed that permanent vacancies were up by eight per cent in the last quarter compared with the previous three-month period.

Work Foundation calls for focus on science industry

The Work Foundation has called on the government to place a greater focus on knowledge-based industries such as the scientific field in order to boost sales jobs and other roles in the sector.

According to a submission by the Work Foundation to the Treasury for its Comprehensive Spending Review, the government needs to make a "firm, long-term commitment" to constructing a credible plan for sustainable economic recovery.

Associate director Ian Brinkley said the UK's reliance on the knowledge economy as a driving force of the recovery has "never been greater".

"The submission shows that, over the past 30 years, knowledge-intensive services have provided the highest levels of new jobs. To meet continuing rising demand for higher knowledge-intensive skills, the higher and further education system must continue to expand capacity," he added.

It comes after Lisa Boutineau, regional director for the Recruitment and Employment Confederation in Scotland, recently pointed out that there has been a sales recruitment rise in the country, but more needs to be done to ensure continued growth in the jobs market.

Jobs market 'facing demand from military personnel'

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that the industry is currently crying out for sales engineers but some people are either unaware of the opportunities or have not researched the role well enough.

There is a huge demand for people in roles such as sales engineers in 2010, according to a new report.

Green industry 'still has huge potential'

The green sector still offers real potential for expansion, growth and creation of roles, such as sales jobs, according to one expert.

Simon Bullock, economy campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said that the previous Labour government started the stimulation of the green economy and now the coalition administration needs to support that progression.

"It's a growing sector but it does need support, so it's really important that the government continues to support these industries, whether it's offshore renewables or energy efficiency or low carbon vehicles," he stated.

The expert added that although the sector continues to grow it needs support from the government in the form of things, like the green investment bank, if it is to achieve its potential and create sales jobs in the process.

The government has invested £10 million into an automotive firm which plans to create electric-powered vehicles in the UK, which could be good news for people searching for sales jobs.

BT helps to create telecommunications sales jobs

Telecoms giant BT has pledged to create new telesales jobs during the recession and plans to do so by relocating roles from Indian call centres.

The roles could include new staff being required to work weekend and late-night shifts, which has seen the Communications Workers Union start discussions with the company to ensure unsociable working hours are not forced upon staff.

A report from Which? said that some retail sales companies are trying to impress customers even more in the economic downturn.

Jaclyn Clarabut, assistant editor of Which?, said: "People are really happy with Apple and John Lewis because their staff are available, they're on hand to answer any questions and they are knowledgeable."

She added that specialist stores are being given a run for their money by more general retailers, which are providing excellent customer service.

Ms Clarabut went on to say that more people are buying computers and gadgets, which is good news for people in sales jobs within the competitive electronics industry.

PC World recently received a 42 per cent customer score, based on a combination of overall consumer satisfaction and endorsement, in a survey by Which?.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has agreed a multi-million pound contract with a maintenance firm which could help bolster engineering sales jobs in the UK.

Panavia won the £28 million contract to look after the Tornado GR4 aircraft, which the RAF said is still one of the "most capable ground attack platforms" within its arsenal.

The company could eventually oversee £207 million worth of modifications to the planes if the second phase is put in motion.

Sales jobs 'could be bolstered by scrappage scheme'

The British Rail Consortium (BRC) has called for Labour to introduce a scrappage scheme and remove VAT on domestic appliances in order to give a boost to sales jobs.

In a letter to the chancellor, Alistair Darling, the BRC wrote that the British public should be made aware of the importance of switching to the most energy-efficient domestic products and encouraged to purchase them through a scrappage incentive, which would in turn create sales jobs.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said: "Removing VAT and exploring the possibility of a scrappage scheme would do a lot to get old energy and water-squandering appliances out of people's homes."

He added that helping households to reduce their impact on the environment is the next step for the industry, after retailers have made strides to cut emissions themselves.

The government has already bolstered construction sales jobs by making a £1 billion fund available to firms and around 270 companies have already been shortlisted for the money.

Labour is set to invest around £3 million in two software companies, boosting electronic sales jobs and supporting the sector, according to business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson.

The £3 million will be split between KeTech, which provides communication software and services to the rail industry, and Vamosa, which creates software to help governments analyse, monitor and maintain business content.

IPhone and ipod 'desirable purchases'

The iPhone has been named the number one Christmas gadget by online retailer ebay, sales representatives looking to spend their commission may be interested to learn.

According to Tom Dunmore, editor-in-chief of Stuff magazine, the product has been "massively popular" this year because it has built on the success of the Apple ipod.

He added the mp3 player is desired by all members of society.

"The iPod, unlike most gadgets, actually transcends gender and transcends age. You get people from all walks of life who really want to have one," said Mr Dunmore

He went on to comment that the 3G version of the iPhone, which was released in the middle of this year, can now be bought more cheaply than the original version, while the products features have improved.

Research carried out by ebay indicates the average total gift spend per person this Christmas will be under £400 as a result of the current uncertain economic climate.

Teleconferencing 'can be used effectively' by sales engineers

A manufacturer has launched a strategy it hopes will allow it to improve sales engineer performance, a source says.

Micro-Epsilon has begun using teleconferencing as part of its sales engineer technique, Process and Control Today reports.

Customer questions which require a response from the firm's design staff can be answered immediately by the relevant, knowledgeable employee through a computer's webcam and microphone.

This means those in sales engineer jobs who are not qualified to offer technical support will be able to supply answers which could previously only be obtained through filing a request with head office, the news provider reports.

Micro-Epsilon will also offer a test facility so its customers can experience the product before deciding to purchase and install it in their own facilities.

Chris Jones, managing director for the firm, tells the source: "Discussions can take place between the customer and our own design engineers quickly, with the correct information being provided first time."
